American photographer Harry Whittier Frees dressed his cats \x96 as well as the cats and dogs of his neighbors \x96 in small, people-like clothing and gave them props before photographing them. The black-and-white pictures of these cats and dogs were often given witty captions by Frees, making them the (unknowingly) first LOLcat memes!
